INEOS Project ONE Key Components Successfully Crossed The Strait Of Hormuz And Arrived In Antwerp

From being trapped in the strait to arriving in Antwerp smoothly

INEOS today received the first of the last two modules at the Port of Antwerp. This equipment will be used to complete the construction of the cracker unit for the Project ONE project.

The modules were built in Abu Dhabi, but their shipment to Antwerp was disrupted by the situation in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. After being stranded for several months, the two vessels carrying the two sets of modules successfully passed through the strait during a one-week ceasefire window in mid-June and arrived in Antwerp after a six-week voyage via the Suez Canal.

Key components are being put in place one after another: two sets of ultra-large modules are used to build a giant cracking unit.

The module arrived this time weighs 6,920 tons and stands 55 meters tall. Its weight is nearly equivalent to the total steel structure weight of the Eiffel Tower, and its height is comparable to that of a mid-rise skyscraper. It is one of the largest heavy-lift cargoes to have arrived at the Port of Antwerp in recent years, and it weighs more than the ONE project heating furnace equipment that arrived at the Port of Antwerp last year.

The last module set weighs 7,200 tons and will arrive shortly, helping INEOS complete the construction of the entire unit.

The transport vessel will continue to dock at the terminal to dismantle the protective steel structure for long-distance transportation of the modules, after which the modules will be hoisted and placed in the core area of the plant.

John McNally, CEO of INEOS Project ONE, said: “We are relieved that the final two modules have arrived safely in Antwerp. I am very much looking forward to lifting the modules into place, completing all the piping tie-ins for the modules, and moving the cracker complex toward commissioning. This project is unique in Europe, and this delivery marks an important milestone in its progress.”

Modular Construction Plan

INEOS’s Project ONE proactively adopted a modular construction approach. This solution addressed the challenge of limited space at the Antwerp site, minimized construction disruption to the greatest extent possible, and significantly shortened the project schedule: overseas fabrication bases simultaneously assembled process modules, cracking units, and pipe racks, while the Antwerp site carried out civil works and foundation construction in parallel. The Abu Dhabi pre-fabrication yard completed its phased work in the first quarter of this year, and all construction focus has now shifted to Antwerp.

Civil engineering works have been completed, and the final module has entered the installation phase. The Antwerp plant is currently focusing on mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation installation works. At present, around 80 contractors and a total of 2,500 construction workers are mobilized on site, with cumulative construction man-hours exceeding 14 million.

The construction site is currently laying a total of 1,250 kilometers of instrument cables and power cables, while simultaneously conducting airtightness tests. Supporting buildings such as the office building, control room, and warehouse are also in the finishing stages. In the first quarter of this year, the 380 kV main substation in the factory area was officially put into operation, achieving permanent power supply and laying a critical foundation for the subsequent commissioning work.

Debugging work is a crucial step in the implementation of a project, ensuring the safe and stable commissioning of the equipment. During the debugging phase, the entire system's subsystems will be thoroughly tested to confirm construction safety and that all indicators meet design quality standards. After the mechanical completion of each subsystem, debugging will be carried out in stages.

The entire plant complex is scheduled to achieve mechanical completion by the summer of next year, with the cracker unit targeted for official startup in the second half of 2027.
