HEXPOL Expands Automotive Material Portfolio with PCR-Grade Options

The PCR levels of the four polymer families range from 10% to over 80%.
The portfolio includes PC/ABS and ABS, reinforced PP, and thermoplastic elastomers (TPE). PCR content ranges from 10% to over 80%, depending on the polymer type, technical requirements of the end application, and availability. Selected grades contain more than 25% post-consumer vehicle recycling material.
HEXPOL’s Almaak, RheTech, and TPE companies have developed these materials for automotive interior and exterior parts, including:
Console and Decoration
Bumper bracket and side foot
Inlay pads and fenders
Washers and Electronic Enclosures
Noise and vibration damping
Dr. Thomas Köppl, Global Product Management Director for Thermoplastics at HEXPOL, commented: “We areWe support the automotive industry in meeting the growing demand for plastic materials containing post-consumer recycled (PCR) content. For our PCR compounds, we carefully manage material consistency, mechanical properties, color stability, odor, volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, and long-term durability.
For multi-component molding, HEXPOL tested several combinations of PC/ABS and TPE in accordance with ASTM D903 to measure the adhesion between the materials. According to HEXPOL, these combinations demonstrated excellent peel strength exceeding 5 N/mm.
Example Levels and PCR Content
Examples of automotive materials containing PCR include:
| PCR content | Typical Applications | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Anjacom® PC/ABS R050/75S PCR | Computer/ABS | 30% PCR | Center console, cup holder, interior trim |
| Anjacom® ABS R050/7020 PCR | ABS | 30% PCR | Interior, bumper bracket, glove box cover |
| Rhecomp RCT230-00 | PP-TD20 | 80% PCR | Bracket, wire channel, shielding |
| Rhecomp RCG230-00 | PP-GF30 | 40% PCR | Bracket, wire channel, shielding |
| Dryflex® PCR 753468-3 | TPS | 75% PCR | Inlaid pad |
| Dryflex® PCW 90A331B | TPO | 33% ELV-PCR | Appearance, fender |
Several OEMs have already adopted these thermoplastic materials. For instance, Anjacom PC/ABS R050/75S is used in series production for Cupra models in collaboration with the Volkswagen Group.
“Every HEXPOL thermoplastics company uses recycled materials. We have been doing this for decades. Every day, we test new material combinations to meet performance, safety, and cost targets. We are pleased to add these PCR thermoplastics to our automotive product portfolio, which already features a wide range of compounds based on post-industrial recycled (PIR) materials,” added Köppl.
