Great Wall Motor Evaluates Introducing Pickup Trucks to Indonesian Market

According to Gasgoo Auto, Great Wall Motor is a manufacturer with an extensive product lineup. In addition to passenger vehicles, the automaker, headquartered in Baoding, China, has also made significant achievements in the commercial vehicle segment, including pickups and crew cab models.

Previously, the General Manager of Great Wall Motor’s Indonesian subsidiary stated that the company does not rule out the possibility of introducing pickup trucks to the Indonesian market, although he did not disclose a specific timeline at the time. “The pickup truck market in Indonesia holds tremendous potential—it is an opportunity,” he remarked then.

However, these pickup products have not appeared to date. Recently, inquiries were made about Great Wall Motor's plan to introduce competitors to Hilux and Triton.

This time, Bagus Susanto, CEO of Great Wall Motor's Indonesia branch, provided a response.

"We do have pickup truck products and are preparing to enter the Indonesian market," said the executive, who previously worked at a brand known for its diesel pickup trucks.

"Currently, we are researching and evaluating which model is suitable for the Indonesian market. Pickups are an attractive and promising market, but we cannot act hastily; we must find a product that truly fits the Indonesian market," Bagus further explained.

"We currently have two diesel engine options, 2000cc and 2400cc, which have been installed in our pickup models such as Poer," he explained in detail.

"The choice of engine is a key point of our observation, in order to bring a suitable product to the Indonesian market," he added.

It is claimed that diesel engines are quite practical for pickup trucks or double-cab vehicles. One reason is that the Indonesian pickup and double-cab market is already quite familiar with such engines. Moreover, Great Wall Motors already offers diesel-engine models in its product lineup in Indonesia.

As we all know, among the products currently sold by GWM in Indonesia, there is one that uses a diesel engine, namely the GWM Tank 300 and Tank 500.

These two body-on-frame SUVs are equipped with the same GW4D24 diesel engine. These diesel SUVs have received a good response in the Indonesian market, with sales even exceeding those of the more expensive hybrid versions.
