Nova Chemicals Corporation
Company Type: General Plastic Producers
Main products: Nova Chemicals' main products include:
1. Ethylene: Nova Chemicals produces approximately 8 billion pounds of ethylene annually, serving as the foundation for producing various chemical products such as polyethylene, ethylene oxide, polyvinyl chloride, and styrene.
2. Polymer-grade propylene: Primarily used in the plastics industry, with over half of the polymer-grade propylene in North America used to produce polypropylene. Other common products include propylene oxide and acrylonitrile.
3. Crude butadiene: The crude butadiene produced by Nova Chemicals contains about 70% 1,3-butadiene. This product is transported by barge for further processing to produce purer butadiene. Most butadiene is made into synthetic rubber.
4. Debutanized aromatics concentrate: Also known as DAC or pyrolysis gasoline, it is an aromatic mixture containing about 40% benzene. DAC undergoes further refining to produce gasoline additives, styrene, and other petrochemical products.
In addition, Nova Chemicals also produces a variety of co-products during the ethylene production process, including:
- Propylene: Used as a raw material for producing polypropylene, acrylonitrile, tert-butylbenzene, propylene glycol, propylene oxide, and other polymers.
- Crude butadiene: Used for the production of chemicals, elastomers, plastics, and rubber.
- Aromatics concentrate: A petrochemical mixture containing more than 50% aromatics, which is further processed to extract and separate aromatics, petrochemicals, and gasoline formulation products.
- Benzene: Used as a primary feedstock for producing styrene, tert-butylbenzene, and other specialty chemicals.
- Toluene/xylene: A petrochemical mixture used as a raw material for gasoline formulations and industrial chemicals.
- Gasoline formulation products (C6-C8 and C9-200): Hydrocarbon mixtures used in gasoline formulations.
- Crude C5: A hydrocarbon mixture containing isoprene, pentenes, and natural gasoline components, used for synthetic rubber, tapes, resins, and plastics.
- UPR grade dicyclopentadiene (DCPD): Used for special products such as polyester resins, adhesives, coatings, varnishes, and specialty chemicals.
- Octylenes™ mixture: Mainly used for producing other chemicals and gasoline formulation products.
- Carbon dioxide: Used for enhanced oil recovery.
- Hydrogen: Used as a fuel gas and petrochemical feedstock, with purified hydrogen used in agricultural fertilizer production.
